In Pittsburgh’s downtown district, some new designs in the crosswalks at 11th Street and Penn Avenue are catching the eyes of road users. White painted designs include arrows, lines and arches that reflect the city’s bridges. The green bike lanes on Penn Avenue have their own design through the intersection. These designs are meant to narrow the travel lanes, slow drivers and send the message that pedestrians and bicyclists are a priority at the intersection. The group that implemented these designs will be seeking input over the next year from road users and doing traffic studies. The paint will last for about a year, after which stakeholders will decide if they want to make it permanent. Read more about the project here.
